KABWE SELECTED FOR NATIONAL FUKUOKA LANDFILL TRAINING
8th December 2025.
We are proud to be part of the on-going Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development-National Capacity Building Training on Disposal Site Management using the FUKUOKA METHOD at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Lusaka.
The workshop which started on 24th November will run up to 28th November 2025 and was officially opened by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary – Technical Services, Mr. Nicholas Phiri, ably represented by the Director of Rural Development, Mr. Fanizani Phiri.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Permanent Secretary thanked the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for their continued partnership and support in improving solid waste management across Zambia. He urged all participating local authorities to fully embrace this new initiative so that they can professionally manage their respective landfills, protect the environment, and reduce the carbon footprint.
The Fukuoka Method is a smart, low-cost landfill system from Japan that lets air into the waste so bacteria can break it down quickly — producing no bad smell and far less methane gas. It uses simple pipes to collect and naturally clean dirty leachate water, relies on local materials, protects the environment, and turns old dumps into safe, stable sites in record time.
Kabwe Municipal Council is among only 10 selected Councils nationwide attending this important training, alongside Nakonde, Kitwe, Solwezi, Chingola, Ndola, Mongu, Mufulira, Livingstone, and Chipata.
Our delegation comprises: Town Clerk – Mr. Jovax Ngoma, Director Public Health – Mr. Christopher Mtonga and Civil Engineer – Mr. Richard Miyanze.
This training will equip us with cutting-edge skills in landfill design, construction, maintenance, monitoring, and data reporting; important for the improved management of our local Mukobeko dumpsite.
